He became Chair of the History and Political Science Department in 2016.
He holds a Ph.D. in Government from the University of Virginia (1993), a Masters in Political Science from the American University (1990), a Masters in Pastoral Counseling from Olivet (1996), a Masters in Professional Counseling from Olivet (1998), and a Bachelors Degree from Dordt College (1988).
He has authored five books: Empowering the Poor which encourages education reform for the economically disadvantaged, Hope in Troubled Times which nurtures a vision of global justice in the 21st century, Herman Dooyeweerd and Eric Voegelin: A Comparative Study which explores two influential 20th century political philosophers, College: What's the Point? which challenges undergrads to grow deeply during their college years, and Splashing in Puddles which inspires dads to build relationships with their daughters.
David and his wife April have homeschooled their five daughters (Maggie, Ellie, Ani, Libby, and Jessie) from a Classical, Christian perspective since kindergarten. In his free time, DVH- as he's known around campus- enjoys long distance running and working out at the gym.
