Dr. James Miles is the 2014 recipient of The Willis E. Snowbarger Award for Teaching Excellence, as announced during Olivet Nazarene University’s 2014 School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS) Commencement ceremony.
Dr. Miles has served as an adjunct professor with Olivet since 2010 and is also an active consultant in community formation and sustainability. Described as a thought leader in his content area of economics and sustainability, he displays an obvious passion for how these two forces can impact an organization and, ultimately, the community.
He holds two degrees from Virginia Union University: Doctor of Ministries in Faith-Based Economic Development and Finance, and Master of Divinity in Community Formation. His Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems degree is from Park University.
“Dr. Miles cares about his students, often going out of the way to assist them with challenges they are facing,” said Dr. Jonathan Bartling, SGCS associate dean. “He continues to model the importance of lifelong learning and community engagement. Students praise his understanding of the content he teaches and also his ability to utilize his past experiences to make real life applications. He is passionate about engaging his students in learning.”
The Snowbarger Award honors the legacy of Dr. Willis Snowbarger, as well as honoring the outstanding service of an adjunct faculty member. Dr. Snowbarger served Olivet as a professor, dean and vice president for academic affairs. He was instrumental in the development of Olivet’s expanded liberal arts and professional curriculum, the building of a strong faculty and the achievement of numerous accreditation initiatives.
